The JET Program genreally treats its participants so well that it really is sad to see when a participant is screwing the program over (coming to work a little hung over, enjoying being "on stage" but not reciprocating with any interest in their own cooperating teachers and students). JET can be affect a profound change in your life and the lives of the kids and teachers you meet. Have a blast, but also, take your role seriously. The JET folks have really trusted you with a lot.

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

ALL HAIL, TOFUGU!! I love you!! I was on JET for two years; those were some of the absolute best years of my life, and they have influenced my outlook on life and my career path (teacher) in so many ways. I didn't watch the videos, so I don't know if these things were stated, but if not, I think they are important: ...I think the interviewers have wised up to the "type" that wants to be a JET participant because they really like manga and animae. If that is your primary interest, JET may not be for you. If that's what INITIALLY got you interested in Japan and you can substantiate that you now have a BROADER interest in the country, people and culture, you're good. Likewise, interviewers and cooperating schools are wary of the JET participant who is coming to Japan in an effort to extend his/her college expereinces in the frat/sorority house. Japan is TONS of fun, but the best candidate will be one who has (and can convey!!) a genuine interest in Japan, in education, in travel and in learning about the world. I don't begrudge anyone who has joined JET as a way to get to Japan or a way to be with a foreign partner, but I want to stress that if there is no OTHER reason you want to be in Japan, you might do better for yourself and the students and teachers you'd be working for through JET if you tried for a national eikaiwa and worked there for a year or so. You'll have a lighter work load, and you'll be beholden to fewer people. (I think.)

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

great, good work

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

Thank you very much for linking Jason's videos! I recently discovered the JET program in college and wanted more information about it. I guess the best way to learn more about it is to watch videos/blogs of current and recent JET members.

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

Have been on JET for 5 years in Okinawa and I have to say I love it. Wouldn't be exaggerating if I said it has changed my life. My only advice on applying is this: have some sort of interest in education if you're thinking about coming here. There are too many people in Japan teaching English because they see it as an extended vacation after they finish university and before they enter what they see as "a real job". In contrast to what you may think about being a teacher in your own country, what you do here in Japan does have a profound impact on the students and they do remember you for good or for bad. Coming here for the right reasons makes you more motivated and enthusiastic to the students when things might get tough.

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

KOICHI & JASON - THANK YOU! The pay is good, the hours are generally less than 35 per week, there is a lot of setup assistance when you need an apartment, car, etc. In short, it is a good deal. There are a huge variety of situations though, I just got lucky to live in a mid-sized town with lots of support. I've been on in Fukui for 3.5 years and I've seen all kinds of people come and go. You don't need to be able to teach or even be sane to get hired apparently. If you want an easy way to get a decent job and living setup and don't care where you go (almost no one living in my area got their requested place) go for it. In the interview, your attitude is really the only thing that matters. Look like you are an exciting and interesting person who can think quickly and not get flustered and you have as good a chance as possible to get hired.

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

i would have loved to give JET a go, but my country still isn't on the list, unfortunately, which i assume disqualifies me from applying. some of my friends from university in england have done this though, and they were really pleased with it, as far as i remember. so it's definitely worth trying, for those of you who are toying with the idea. :)

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

As someone who is in the JET Programme right now, this guy seems to be on the mark. I would only add that EVERYTHING you request/suggest as far as placement, work environment, even driving, is subject to the needs of the people willing to hire you. This guy asked to go someplace warm (at least, not north) and they seemed to oblige him. I have a friend who asked for either central Honshu or the northeast and he got sent to Nagasaki. Also, he said he didn't want to drive and they put him out in the sticks, so he had to buy a car.

Me? I got real lucky. You can choose up to three locations and I picked all three in the Kansai area because that's where I did my study abroad and that's where my then-girlfriend lived. They listened to me and sent me to Osaka. Admittedly, it's the most rural area in all of Osaka, but it is in Osaka and there's sufficient public transportation to get me to and from work each day, which is nice because I don't want to drive in this country.

So now I live in Kansai with my wife (we got married right away actually) and everything is going great. I strongly recommend the JET Programme to anyone who is interested SO LONG AS you keep in mind that your requests may be completed ignored. But if you let that ruin your experience, that's your own fault. My friend in Nagasaki is having a great time.

Re: Applying for the JET Program with Jason and his Argonauts

Haha. But I was given a couple of opportunities to do some intern research at some Japanese companies that paid more and offered better benefits. But the offers were still significantly less than equivalent jobs here in the U.S. (about ~1/5), and I need to pay off my loans. So if I wasn't going to take those jobs, I for sure wasn't going to do JET.
