Tofugu Comments: Mixi.jp now hates foreigners. Now requiring a mobile email address to join.

Confirmed. I received an invitation from a friend few weeks ago, but is seems that in order to complete a new registration you need a Japanese keitai address. I was not able to fulfill my reg.

Wow, what a party pooper. I wonder if Mixi will do a run through on existing accounts that registered w/o Japanese mobile emails? Hopefully they wont think of sending a notification asking registered users to update with a Japanese mobile email address. Anyways, I've done some searching, but haven't turned up anything yet.
  • papajohn · 1 year ago
Wow, that's nicely retarded. What about all the Japanese living outside of Japan that are on Mixi?
  • Neil Duckett · 1 year ago
Good point ..... most i know have a Japanese cell aswell though ... but i'm sure many don't.

Still, i live in Japan so no biggie for me.
  • Caitlin · 1 year ago
I have a Mixi account but I refuse to log in again. A short time ago they changed their policy so that they now own your content (in more words but the meaning is there).

    http://altjapan.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/03/m...

This is just one more thing that Mixi's doing to alienate users. I'll be searching for alternatives to practice my Japanese.
  • Neil Duckett · 1 year ago
Is it really a big problem??
  • Caitlin · 1 year ago
Not for some but I feel this business practice is potentially dangerous. What if Facebook started using people's pictures, notes, and other entries for their own whim? Even if their security settings don't allow that information to otherwise be normally available? With this new policy of Mixi's, I wouldn't post 1 personal detail at all.
  • Kasu · 1 year ago
Just felt that I needed to give you a little heads up on facebook: Even though facebook's policy says they don't hand out users personal information to any third party without your permission (you probably already know this), but facebook is pretty much ruled by it's applications: Applications monitored by third party. Meaning that if you allow the application to use your information, it's already outside of facebooks policy.
  • mmnessa · 1 year ago
I've never really paid attention to mixi to be honest, I'm just wondering, is there really that many foreigners that they feel like they have to do something like this?
  • Caitlin · 1 year ago
About 15 others and I were...our Japanese teacher signed us up for this. I never stopped my account afterwards because I found it useful during college.
  • mmnessa · 1 year ago
It sucks, I'm sure Mixi is very resourceful when it comes to learning Japanese and a lot of people will be missing out on that (- _ -)(_ _)
  • Huang · 3 months ago
If you still have that account, can you please give me the login details?
I want to have a Mixi account but I don't have a Japanese cell phone number so it's impossible.

  • Monzika · 1 year ago
Asked a few of my friends in Osaka that are tech-smart but so far....nada.
  • GoddessCarlie · 1 year ago
Damn, what a pain! Only because I hadn't signed up yet - I was waiting for university holidays so I wouldn't get too distracted there. :P :P What a poo. Why, I ask!!! Theoretically, I would think that Gaijin who know Japanese would be a great addition to a community like this. I guess I'm just thinking too diversely.
  • JohtoKen · 1 year ago
Crap. I guess this explains why Ikuna-chan hasn't sent me a single message ever since last month. =O

Looks like I'm gonna have to wait until I actually MOVE to Japan to join again. =3

EDIT: Well, since I'm already registered (with a fake birthdate, no less), seems like I'm safe...for now. =O

I don't see the sense in this unless they really do hate Americans. I still don't do much on the page because i'm learning Kanji now, but it still sucks to know your not wanted in there...
  • sarindipity · 1 year ago
Americans aren't the only non-Japanese who try to get mixi accounts...
  • hanbaobaoozers · 1 year ago
Very true. There are a lot of Polish people on mixi!
  • mmnessa · 1 year ago
Why would they do that? I can't see how this is going to help...if anything people will hate mixi from now on...
  • Sougen02 · 1 year ago
I guess I can kind of understand. I mean, look at Myspace. Its msotly used by Americans, and just look at the repuattion! (I understand not just americans have a myspace, just by majority)

I applaud the fact that it makes mixi safer, however, I do beleive their could have been a better method of doing so,other than this.

    =P
  • mmnessa · 1 year ago
it's true that myspace is used mostly by Americans, but I know for a fact that a lot of British/Australian/Canadian also use it. Can you imagine what would happen if myspace required American cell phone numbers for signing up? or Facebook???
  • bia · 1 year ago
dam they wont hide how xenofobic they are....come ON! its not like the foreigners are turning mixi upside down
  • xeli · 1 year ago
ya, they love to exclude non-japanese pple
  • Anna · 1 year ago
I'm disappointed too, as I was asked to sign up by various Japanese friends.

But I can kind of understand mixi's concern with misbehaving foreigners. I mean, everywhere where there's Japanese gathering, a bunch of rabid foreign anime-, manga-, game- or visual kei rock star fan(girl)s come crawling all over the place like cockroaches, harrassing good-looking Japanese people with their Japan-fangirl-ness and extremely annoying otaku-level Japanese language "skills" and even physically fighting over the right to talk to that divine Japanese being. I've been to Japan several times, as well as to anime- and J-Rock related events and it's the same everywhere. A Japanese person has to take alot of harrassment from foreign Japan-fanatics who think that Japan really is like their anime phantasy world (in which characters tend to hug strangers, but the real Japanese won't appreciate you clinging to them - nobody will).
And about signing up to practice your Japanese: has it ever occurred to you that not everyone wants to volunteer as a language tutor, listening to horrible, hardly understandable sentences and being expected to reply and to correct all errors? I wouldn't, that's for sure. I get lots of help requests over the internet on various things and like, NO? I have a life for chrissake! Sign up for language courses but leave me the fuck alone.
Sometimes it seems to me like with all the Japanese products such as anime, music, games, sushi etc. becoming accessible and affordable to the outside world, some people seem to think that they can "buy" or at least "claim" Japanese PEOPLE as well as their PRODUCTS. "ZOMG ur Japanese, u must be mah friend!"
Japan's xenophobia is a pain to me, too sometimes although I can adapt to their manners and speak their language instead of being an otaku and thinking that's enough to fit in. But hell, looking at my own country, Belgium, I can understand countries that try to exclude foreigners as much as possible.
  • koichi · 1 year ago
Omg. Yes. The hugging. I never thought about before, but the weaboos
do try to hug me, and I'm only part Japanese. I hate being touched so
    much...

    Sent from my phone
  • ratedr · 1 year ago
Sucks for those otaku Japanese. Except for Japanese people who stray into western sites / going abroad, average people, (not into fashion-gei, anime, whatever,) they have no idea about this problem. But it's pretty ironic how avg people want to get foreigners to come hang out with them and what not, but the otaku kids, (at least most I've known,) would rather have nothing to do with the outside of japan world.
  • Cheyanne · 10 months ago
Yea, I mean I like some anime, and listen to japanese music - but I have a very "real" view of japan. So many japan fan's think Japan is like some heaven on earth, I just think It has a great culture and a beautiful language. I hate people who chop up the language in their "Anime talk" and ESSPECIALLY adding "kawaii" and "desu" randomly into english sentances....
Sucks because as soon as I mention anywere that I like a few anime, i'm classified as that type of person....
Guess in short, I have respect for the country and the people, where most just obsses over it and think they can take it for themselves.

    *sigh*
I really wanted to join mixi, I am studying to be an ESL teacher and it would have been great to meet some friends BEFORE I travel there. Guess I'll have to wait till I get there and meet friends the old fashion way - non-electronic ^^
  • Lizz · 3 months ago
uhg.... why do you have to be so harsh, I understand that they should learn the customs and culture some more but I don't think the otaku foreigners are really that bad. I was in Tokyo and I stumbled upon a convention and went inside to check it out. The only people in there were JAPANESE OTAKU GUYS. I was the only white person and the only girl there. And about the whole touching thing that these "otaku foreign girls" apparently do, I never once saw a white girl latch onto a Japanese boy, rather some creepers grabbed my ass on the monorail, a young business guy decided to sleep on me (monorail) and a few drunk older business men tried to pick me up and pay me to go somewhere with them. Might I also add they are all Japanese. So while a few Americans may hug a Japanese acquaintance, Japanese men will grope your butt.

Lots of socially retarded people here blowing out a lot of hot air on mixi. Do you really want to practice Japanese with them? I mean, there are entire friend groups on mixi dedicated to discrediting businesses, other individuals,... it's gone way too far. Do you know that people teaching English in eikaiwa schools have trash talked about them all the time on mixi? It's just another reason for otakus to stay in their apartments even more.

    Hi,
I just received a Mixi invitation, but I don't have a Japanese cell phone account. I searched around and came across this blog.
Here is what I found about getting a Mixi account without having a Japanese cell phone.
    http://mixiura.omegumi.com/
    Does this work?
It seems you still might need to have a Japanese paid Interent provider account.
Can anybody comment on this please?
I want to join the Mixi network too.
  • koichi · 1 year ago
it would make sense that you have to have a japanese paid internet provider. I tried with my own internet provider address koichi(at)tofugu(dot)com and it did not work, probably because it's non Japanese. Those Mixi people really have our numbers, haha.

If you get something to work, though, let us know!
  • Cruxay · 1 year ago
I don't know if anyone commented on this already or not.... but what about those that already have a mixi account? Do they still get to keep it?

I'm just curious, as I've never had an account but have known some people that do.
  • Alexis · 1 year ago

  • 1guy0cups · 1 year ago
Heyhey, taking that as a reason to say mixi hates foreigners is not quite the best thing i guess...
    1. it doesnt matter whether you are a foreigner or not but if you have a keitai... any foreigner in japan can get a keitai (even though it might only be rented).

    2. In other countries there are communities which try to validity true existence of a person etc. by this method... for ex. collegehumor.
  • andrewfx51 · 1 year ago
I can see the validity of wanting to establish the true identity of a person, but as it is there are a lot of sus accounts on mixi.
Besides, if you want to improve your japanese, getting a nico-doga account, looking at ameblo blogs, reading the newspaper sites, or even (don't recommend this btw) tracking down japanese on facebook - are all valid alternatives - most of the stuff people write on mixi is crap anyway.

  • Jay · 1 year ago
Mixi is what I would like to think of as the new "sakoku". That word is what they used to call Japan when it was closed to foreigners. I complained to Mixi support in Japanese about the new policy. They said it was for the "safety" of the community, to keep bad people out. Like foreigners are so bad and Japanese people with Japanese cell phones are so good.

If you are interested in learning Japanese, might I recommend Lang-8.com instead? It is a Mixi-like site with cool language learning tools, a large base of Japanese users, and tons of people using it. Sorry for the ad, but I think it is a great alternative to Mixi.

i dunno if this works with other providers, but if you do have a friend in japan who's with docomo, they're allowed to change their email address up to 3 times a day. so you could ask them to change it for like 5 minutes, register, get them to answer the confirm mail, and then they can change their address back.

haven't actually tried this but i think it would work.

I want a mixi in order to get in touch with my friends in Japan. Do I need the mobile phone number just for the registration? If yes I could ask my friends whether they'd use their mobile phone.
  • koichi · 1 year ago
You do need a japanese mobile phone. You should just ask them to
register it all for you, it will cut out a lot of steps. Then they can
just change the pass and email, and tell you what it is.
  • Krystal · 1 year ago
Yeah I heard about this a while ago and I'm glad I made my account before they began enforcing this. I still have my account and have for months so it doesn't look like they're going to get rid of the people who already have accounts, at least the ones that are being used the way they should be.

    What a pain Mixi is!
(Sorry tech talk is in this post)
I managed to get an account using a pay-as-you-go Japanese mobile phone when I was in Japan on holiday.
You get an email sent to your mobile phone and you have to access a URL in the email (from a mobile phone) to verify you have received it! My mobile couldn’t access the internet so I attempted to access the URL via Internet Explorer but it didn’t work.
I even tried to change the User-Agent: details in the HTTP request header using FireFox to attempt to spoof the request, but didn’t work. (I may have used the incorrect User-agent)
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/967

I forwarded the email it to another Japanese friend’s mobile and he accessed it to confirm and that worked OK.
  • koichi · 1 year ago
Yeah, that's pretty much what you have to do. Find a friend, or get a
    pay-for email account that's hosted in Japan. It's lame-o.
  • TheNoel · 1 year ago
I think I'm going to look into phone solutions for Japanese people living in America.
As long I'm with a major provider like SoftBank or DoCoMo, it shouldn't matter whether I'm 海外, right?
  • edt · 1 year ago
hello, can I get an invite please? i have a jp mobile phone and would like to try mixi.
    edt at daikon.it

    thank you very much!
  • stshores24 · 1 year ago
I originally had some potential solutions in my post on the topic, but it looks like those don't work now. I suspect that Mixi requires a cell phone for all email addresses now, including those in Japan, but of course I have no way of verifying that. Big raspberries to Mixi for this.
  • Billy Chan · 1 year ago
Sorry but it would be illegal to find a loop hole in this, the only way you can register to MIXI out of Japan is by asking one of your Japanese friends in Japan that arnt interested in using Mixi and use there Japanese cell phone address ie. Docomo, Softbank etc. This is the only way around it.. There would be the option of purchasing a phone in Japan and leaving it there but they don't have handy pre pay things like we do, only plan type set ups.. Bad luck on Gaijins! Although i think this is good because theres MANY seedy guys who wunnu 'practice' their kimoi nihongo with poor Japanese girls who can say no.

If you are willing to learn Japanese, I recommend you www.lang-8.com, a community created exclusively for people interested in learning foreign languages. It is actually used by a LOT of Japanese. Its interface is very similar to Mixi's, so most users would get used to it quickly.
  • Viet · 1 year ago
    Hi Oscar

Thanks for the suggestion! We actually have been recommending lang-8 for some time. Koichi has even made an article for the lang-8 service itself (which I might add has been referenced many times). You can check it out by clicking the link below

That sucks! I've been a member since 2002 or 2003 and was invited. But recently alot of Japanese social networks have been requiring cells. Sorry to say but their are foreigners who misuse mixi. And if your going to invite ppl becareful because if your guest misbehaves, the blame gets but on you and whoever invited you. I've only invited 3 and that was in late 2006.
  • lullemans72 · 1 year ago
it actually is not that difficult to get a mixi account even if you dont have a japanese cellphone or you're living outside japan. if you know any japanese people/friends or whatever who have a japanese cellphone (most likely), and they're not registered to mixi, then just ask them if you could use their cellphone to register.

Where are all the invite-wanting people coming from all of a sudden?
  • Rob_Hoolan · 11 months ago
Maybe you could just guess a Keitai email address and hope the person owning that email is stupid enough to confirm it.
  • Lady_Jess · 11 months ago
    LOL Koichi & Rob

Anyway, most of the Japanese people on that site signed up for mixi with their regular emails before this keitai thing was implemented, so just tell one of your friends to register your email address and their keitai address. Simple solutions.

Really, you can just ask their cell address, and have them confirm, that way you can make your own password and all that jazz.
  • vxxwer · 11 months ago
Well I can understand why mixi did this

It is probably thanks to stupid young american. european kids that thought it would be fun just to register without even speaking japanese. because oh so anime is so popular and everybody thinks japanese is cool ne??

and thanks to this people like me [japanese philology2nd year , have a lots of japanese friends there and classmates who registered before the restrictions] cant sign up.

    thanks stupid people

Hi I just signed up for a paid mail service from japan. I m gonna try this and see if this work.

I need a invitation first hope somebody can send it!

I'll comment on how it goes!
    spiralpierce@gmail.com
  • Orange Juice · 10 months ago
    vxxwer:

Wow. what a douche some people can be. You think you are any better than stupid young american, european kids? Just because you are now in your 2nd year and because you have Japanese friends? Wow, you are soo cool and so much more entitled to enter a cost-free SNS than any other people... how unfair of those yound american and european kids to intentionally prevent you from coming on mixi.

Truth be told, yeah...deep inside of me... I am also annoyed by those young american and european kids, BUT I know, that IN FACT I have absolutely no right to do so, especially not to blame them for stuff like this.

I don't think that this was the reason AT all... there are so many Japanese idiots (no offense, but iditos exist everywhere) stalking, sending annoying messages to other members and so on... believe me they outweigh any amount of cool european or american kids.
Furthermore... why would mixi care about foreign european or american kids who will immediately leave the site because they can't fucking speak japanese.

The real reason is... scams, spam and that stuff... they want to reduce the amount of fake accounts.

@kiko: name some of these sites.... I wanna check that out :)
btw, there are american sites as well... it changed now, but collegehumor.com required an american cellphone to be able to post comments not too long ago.

In general, I think mixi.jp just doesn't consider people in foreign countries as target customers, that's all... if a big enough amount of people weote a petition and asked mixi to introduce some kidn of globally available identity verification... oh well... but I guess it's too expensive to implement.

Just to avoid misunderstanding: I am also annoyed by this move, as I annoyed with pandora.com's inavailability in europe or video playback restrictions on various sites for countries other than the US... it goes so much AGAINST what the internet stands for.

I have a question but I'm not really sure if anyone can answer it.
I do indeed have a keitai and a softbank.ne.jp address, but I'm not currently in Japan, which means no service for my cell. Is there any way I could set my keitai address up to forward to a regular email account, or would even that require being able to access the network?
I was invited to join by a friend a month or so ago and haven't been able to get past the keitai thing yet. Sucks.

It's unfair that foreigner can't use Mixi. But you can use other site like Mixi :-)

For example I found a great site where you can learn and speak with japanese people by mail and online ! It's lingueo : http://www.lingueo.com/

You can teach your mother tongue on Lingueo and earn money. You can learn Japanese with native speaker:-) And you can speak with many people!!

Let's learn languages, teach Japanese and meet friend all around the world !

I'm living in japan and have a phone but my phone is an old banger that cant access the internet.
So i have the link right there waiting to be clicked but i cant click it!
I just get ''cannot connect to network''
So not only does it require you to have a japanese phone in japan, but it requires you to have one capable of using the net (ok so 99% of them can but I've settled with a hand me down - beggars cant be choosers)

I wonder if smeone else can input the link from there phone?

I went to high school in Japan, but moved back to the US for college. All of my high school friends have since changed their keitai addresses, so I can't find any of them unless I have mixi. I have an invitation, but I will have no way of contacting my family and friends until I'm in Japan again.
I'm not just some gaikokujin looking to hound strangers for Japanese practice. I just want to find my friends. It took me so long to find someone who would invite me, and now...

This so defeats the purpose of social networking.

i don't understand the point of this post saying that mixi hates foreigners, does that also mean that hulu.com hates foreigners too because their videos can only be watched in the US?
  • koichi · 7 months ago
The reason Hulu doesn't broadcast outside the US is because of legal issues,
barring them from broadcasting shows to other audiences. That's the fault of
the studios, not to mention the people who want to make money off of ads
(gotta get targeted ads for other locations in the world). Hulu's actually
going to start broadcasting in England soon, though, as they've finally
gotten a deal to make it legally possible.

Mixi on the other hand... I haven't found any legal reason for them to do
this. If I've missed something then definitely someone let me know, though.
  • Anon · 6 months ago
yeah, there is no legal grounds for mixi to prevent foreigners from signing up yet, but it is possible to follow your arguments for hulu on mixi too, that Mixi wants to make money off of ads that are targeted at specific audiences. I'm not too sure about the legal issues that hulu faces that prevents it from broadcasting content overseas since I'm not from the States.

but in my opinion, legality doesn't mask the fact that many people outside of the US are unable to watch the videos on hulu.com. Certain music videos on youtube are also not accessible to people outside the US too. I think most US firms are smart enough to put this as a legal issue instead of a discriminatory issue. just my 2 cents worth
  • koichi · 6 months ago
Yeah, I agree with you in some respects - I still think a lot of the
'outside-of-japan-ban' is cultural rather than legal. I know there was a lot
of talk at the time about how Mixi wanted to protect its Japanese users from
creepy gaijin (totally valid, by the way... definitely a lot of super creepy
    asian chasers out there).

On the other hand, the studios blocking hulu from showing vids everywhere
else in the world need to suck it up and let hulu be open. I could rant
about them longer than I can rant about Mixi... and I live in the U.S.,
    haha.

One day both of these sites will be open to people of all countries, and
    we'll know we've attained world peace ;)

  • koichi · 6 months ago
If you have a prepaid you prolly don't have one. You should just ask someone
over there for an invite / to use their email!
  • Zuco · 6 months ago
I don't think they hate foreigners. They just want a Japanese social network community. That's all and a simple way to filter it is using mobile phones.
There are many other social networking, like facebook or Orkut that do not have that kind of restriction.

Anyway call this racism is a little bit excessive. It's just a japan-only social network.

I actually understand why they do it. And TBH, I feel as though it is a good thing.

There are a lot of non-Japanese who go onto mixi and use it as a means to hit on the people and try to bring up their Japanese cool points. There are a lot of very creepy and very disgusting characters on Mixi that are foreign, and when you get higher rates of this sort of behavior, the Japanese are going to crack down. If you're going to use Mixi, use it as a means of social networking, not a way to fap off to HAWT JAPANESE BABES and e-stalk them. You have just as many annoying and utterly creepy anime fanboys that come on there and harass. It's not fair, but a lot of them have ruined it for the rest of us - and the person above me is a good example of Mixi is excluding foreigners.

Also consider - Japan is a very xenophobic country. This is no secret, nor should it be a surprise. It is a Japan-Only social network, which, quite simply, means that Westerners ARE NOT WANTED and are excluded. That's how life is.
  • Juan · 5 months ago
hi ive seen some posts on the net suggesting that u can activate a mixi account without a cell phone email, as long as the address proves u live in Japan. do u know anything about this?
my internet provider threw in an email account with the package (i actually logged on to it for the first time today) so as u can see from the address it might just do the trick?
  • klobnon · 4 months ago
    Connichiwa!

I've been studying at Japanese school for several years, but then I returned home.. That was already 10 years ago. When I left Japan, there was no social networks, at least none of my friends used them.. Most of them didn't even have E-mails. I was trying to communicate via standard postal service, but that was expansive fore me (as I was just a kid) and took for ages to get a response.. My family changed the address several times, so finally, I just lost all contacts.
But I had very good friends in Japan. I was trying to find them so many times on the web... But you know, everything is so much closed! And they don't use facebook/Myspace almost at all!
I will probably have a chance to make a ketai conformation this week I hope, so could anyone please (PLEASE!!!) send me an invite? I need it sooo bad... I need it that much!!!
I will so much appreciate it... Here is my address:

Did the policy change? My friend was invited by an international student of ours (because he asked to be invited). Our Japanese friend invited him and he was able to register and confirm and even log into his mixi profile! He does not have a Japanese mobile, nonetheless a Japanese mobile email address. And he don't know about any restricted policy about mixi. He got invited and registered and got in. Hmmmm.

"Lang-8" is a great SNS for practicing languages. It was made specifically for that purpose, and anyone from anywhere can join freely.

Is mixi still requiring the cell number? I can't believe this! I have been getting quite a few spam mails lately from people that want a "special friend", but ironically they are all Japanese. And Japanese people message me wanting to practice English. So this whole "Japanese cell phone" thing isn't going to accomplish anything. I hope they don't become like cyworld in Korean and make you put in your Japanese passport number or something.
  • kanjo · 1 week ago
the obvious work around is to get a friend to lend you their address but the obvious block is that they already joined with their address.
    have I a solution?
    you bet ;)
(you don't have to read this paragraph) It doesn't *require* a keitai to join, having a keitai is optional, but you need a "secure" email address to join. These include most paid emails as well as keitai addresses. One day I thought, "well, if I can't use hotmail, or gmail, what other address could I try?" and my thoughts wondered to my college email address when it hit me, *THEIR* college email addresses. I have lots of close Japanese friends who are college students, so why not try ask one of them to invite themselves and let me change the email to mine. It worked :)
I don't know about all colleges, but it worked with a kansai gaidai (関西が国語大学) address
    good luck

you can add 掛林 安生 on mixi if you like

May I have an invitation? (kayhaskins [at] gmail)

I have a keitai and, of course, an e-mail address. (I don't have nearly as many awesome hats as you do, though.)
