Tofugu Comments: Practice Kana, Kanji, and Particles with Nihongoup

  • Meeeeelly · 6 months ago
The software would be absolutely wonderful in my study, especially the particle kanji modes~ If you could find it in your heart to perhaaaaps pick me, I'd love you forever. :D

Of course if that didn't convince you, I made a little something that might persuade you?

it's not that funny, but thanks for considering. C:

I agree with Viet - this right here is a winner, under one condition... I get to put the picture in the fan art section. Cool? This was very very nicely done, thank you!

WOW! まじやばい!This is really cool... nice work! Could I feature it on the Nihongoup Blog? (http://nihongoup.com/blog/)

I'll send you a free serial as soon as possible ^^

I recently tried the free trial of this program and absolutely loved it. Used in conjuction with IKnow, I instantly felt like my studying habits had found a great new companion. Then my car had to go into the shop and I had to squeeze all extra expenses out of my budget this week. If I don't win here I'm certainly going to purchase this program someday... though winning one would be sweet too ^_^

I'm in Osaka right now and sweet monkey christ I need to learn kanji.

Yesterday I spent half an hour trying to find cough medicine before giving up and settling for Calpis instead (didn't work!). Cough drops? Nope, wound up with candy.

Last week I tried to get a delicious cream bun but wound up with a (wrong kind of delicious) katsu curry bun! Are you delicious curry bun? Yes. But sometimes I'm in a fried pork mood and sometimes I'm in a sweet cream mood and the two are not interchangeable.

All I want is cream buns, Tofugu, cream buns. Help me out.
  • Denis Plamondon · 6 months ago
I would like to try it and have one of these free copy. Why? I will put a link on my blog under the page : 日本語の勉強 and it could be a good publicity for the software designer. How about this suggestion!

I'm moving away from Sweden to Kyoto in October to study Japanese full-time for one or more years. So... I would have real use for it. =P

From Sweden I am making a run,
moving to Japan to have some fun.
Winning this software would be nice,
there would be happy tears in my eyes.

    Haha... xD
  • Lindsay · 6 months ago
I want to win the software so I can practice my Japanese - in the summer I don't have anyone to practice with since school is out, and I think this would really help keep my mind fresh. I do a lot of research on Japanese art, culture, and history (as an art history major), and if I forget how to read it can be very hard to do research (as a lot of contemporary research is only available in Japanese). I also really want to go and study in Japan for my masters studies. Also, it just looks plain fun (and a much better way to learn compared to flash-card like games) compared to most software for practicing.
  • Sami · 6 months ago
I Japanese for breakfast lunch and sometimes dinner. It comes on the form of books, cds and internet. Still, I need that special something and that's why I need this. Besides, I like sexy things. I follow you on twitter cause I'm hip like that and so are you. You can also brag about being followed by a Yemeni. How many people do you know that are from Yemen?
I wanna brag to my friends about knowing how to say more than just "issho ni uchi ni ikamasen ka."
  • Keyla · 6 months ago
I wanna win it...cause im broke as a mofo...and it looks like an awesome piece of software for me to get crankin on my kanji. I love kanji but im tired of the books and the software looked like FUN.

    Greetings!

Only in a fortnight shall I be taking my dirigible across the Pacific, with hopes of landing in the careening metropolis of Tokyo. I have, however, been plagued on such journeys in the past by these little pink hot air balloons, weaving through the clouds—I do not know for what nefarious purpose they were sent, but now I see the only way I have a chance to finally make it to Japan will be to practice with an appropriate flight simulator such as this. Perhaps I can admonish those damned pink balloons once and for all, with the experiences that this program would allow me. The fact that I'm going to have to write an immense test the day after I arrive to see what program I will be placed in, and that this would truly help in my studies? Indeed, that is just a bonus!

    Sincerely,
Captain Andrew of the H.M.S. OhdeargodIhavetoknowalmostathousandkanji.
  • Catherine · 6 months ago
This sounds strangely fun (even if there should be more zombies, or Godzilla) I'd love to win a copy! I would buy it but free stuff is always better. ^^ It will be useful in the summer when I'm out of school and plan to devote alot of time to my language studies :D I especially need to try and remember the Kanji... right now I know one. Just one. :D

    Threatening Tanka for Free Softs

    I want this dang thing
    and stole baby Godzilla
    he is in danger
his dark eyes look sad with hope
this software can set him free

I just want to pass the stupid JLPT level 3 without resorting to evil or magic or evil magic.

If I can make it so particles can't kill me, then I am sure nothing will!
  • caughtredhanded · 6 months ago
I'm not vying for a copy of this, as I already have it, but I pretty much agree with the majority of Koichi's comments: the particles section is most definitely the best. I also agree that more kanji would be better, even if you are a beginner, as this gets you used to the way that real sentences look and feel, and furigana would assist with reading. All things told, it's a great little app.

An iPhone version would be a great addition!
  • seifip · 6 months ago
I always use only the kanji that is learned in the previous JLPT level. For example JLPT 3 list uses only JLPT 4 kanji, JLPT 1 list will use all kanji except the ones in JLPT 1 etc. I am a big fun of total immersion, but there are better places for this like book or manga - in Nihongoup it would pose problem as it would be harder to understand the meaning of the phrase. The idea of furigana is good, but it would be quite small (harder readable) and would take me a really lot of time to implement so I'm not too sure whether and when I will ad it to the game.

If there will be enough sales of the desktop version, and if there are enough people interested in the iPhone version, I'll definitely port it to that platform (Cocoa seems to be quite easy and similar to ActionScript). I may also port it to Windows Mobile (as it's my platform of choice) and possibly to Android.
  • koichi · 6 months ago
I'd love to see a combination of kanji + furigana (and then take away
furigana as you "learn" a kanji and move on to the next level). It makes it
easier to read, and gives people more opportunity to see more kanji. But,
this is such a small criticism, and not something that would blow a sale
    with me.

You should definitely go iPhone! Lots of buyers out there, I bet. You'd have
to stick more with the kanji / particle games, though, as it would be much
more difficult to type things in. It would fit perfect with the ability to
press your finger on a balloon as it's going down to choose your answer.
Absolutely perfect section port, and I think even better than what the
desktop app can offer. I'd buy it along with hundreds or thousands of other
    people as well, I'm sure.
  • rainbowhill · 6 months ago
certainly making it available on the iphone would make it accessible to so many more people, take it mobile!

LOL I'm going to be one of the many people that post comments, wanting the product key for Nihongoup. ^-^ Traditionally, I would study a language by writing it out, and giving it to the teacher to read. Who usually (99.9%) laughs at what I write cause it.... sounds like it has been "translated by online fishes" It would be great to practice grammar particles with Nihongoup.

I've been exposed to the Japanese culture ever since I was a kid through TV and the people around me who love Japanese and are learning it. It's a fascinating language and I would love to seriously learn it, BUT what always stops me is the myriad of characters that I have to face in learning the language--I learned Hiragana and Katakana, yet for some reason some--not all--characters just drip out of my brain and into the netherworld. =_=''

If you want to help a poor, broke college student like me who's in desperate need for a copy, then please give one to me. XD I'll be grateful for all eternity.

i would likes these shiny device, for reasons forthcoming:

    1. i woulds like it a lot for practicing my knowledge times
    2. being able to read the labels of the food items i receives that are japanesey in originy
    3. Mostly, because I am a lifelong student of language and culture, especially of Japan. My income is sparse and shared by my loved ones and do not warrant me spending our limited resources on something that is not food, shelter or clothing.

    thanks yous,

p.s. your site is the bees knees and i am using a lot of the free online resources when i have the time when i'm not working: just being honest not trying to dredge up sympathy. ugh.

    I DESERVE this game!

I was all up in Godzilla's grill the other day, and i was all like, "homie g, i seen this app a while back and i thinks i need it yo" and Godzilla was all like " you DO good sir, you do, but you have no way of purchasing it, but i could help......." and i was all like " YOU COULD, how?" and Godzilla cordially replied " my good friend Koichi is gonna be giving some away in a while, maybe i could hook you up!" and i was all like "EEEEEE! ( term of excitement)" and gave Godzilla a huge hug, but then he forgot who i was, and ate me, so now i'm a computer ghost ( cause that's what i choose to haunt, it was either a computer or a block of old cheese, which would you choose?) and i spend all day doing nothing cause the owner of my house will not buy any good programs. i think i deserve this so i can fulfill my dreams , learn Japanese, and go to Japan to haunt a Japanese computer! EEEEEEE!
  • Julie H. · 6 months ago
I've tried out Nihonjo Up with the trial version, mostly the Hiragana part. And found it really did improve my ability to recognize characters, especailly with the ten ten.

I've tried to go to school to learn Japanese a couple of times. Unfortunately I have been ill and it was too much physically for me. I still really want to learn so am trying every day to study on my own even though Japanese study materials are expensive. My dream is to be able to spend some time in Japan and be able to communicate with people there. And possibly find work again using these skill. I know it's not an easy thing to do, but at least it's giving me something to hope for the future.

I know this all sounds corny, but it's my life, something I don't talk about with others. I guess this means something to me and it's why I'm writing it here.

Thank you for your generous offer, I'm sure whoever wins will be happy getting the program.

  • seifip · 6 months ago
Furigana are readings written in superscript hiragana over the kanji characters to help kids and learners to read complicated or rare characters.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furigana
  • Angeldaine · 6 months ago
    Hm.. pretty cool software..
I've been trying to learn Japanese but it's just hard for me to remember the characters (Hiragana and Katakana).. Haven't even tried learning Kanji yet..

I have tons of notebook where I wrote up pages of hiragana signs like I did in elementary school.

I am in 9th grade and I want to learn japanese (reading and writing especially) however the university won't let me join Japanese classes because I'm too young. I'm really comitted and I have been doing an hour a day learning to speak japanese for 2 years now (since I was in 7th grade) also I got lot's of japanese manga but I keep having to use a Kana chart, and the adult ones need Kanji and I can't get a chart for that!! I will also be verrrrry verrrry happy for all of the days and I am bowing very deeeeeply (That reminds me of when a Miha (Asami Yuma) on Shimokita Glory Days speaks english and says 'You will dive deeeeeeply' and he puts his hand in.....~snaps back to room~)

I quit my job not only because I hated it, but because I wanted to completely devote my time to studying Japanese. I'm crazy, I know, I most certainly am. I need to save money for when I start commuting to college in the fall, and that five bucks could go a long way for my gas tank, considering it's a 45 minute drive. And what's more, I am not very good with particles at all. I think I might be starting to get 「は」 vs. 「が」, but reinforcement of when I'm actually getting it right would be excellent.

    And I'm your favorite...right? ^.^

If there was an iphone version, I would have bought it a week ago when I read this article for the first time. I think it could be a pretty useful tool, especially if it goes up through JLPT 1. I`m interested enough that I`ve *remembered* this article, and come back a week later to post this. Remembered it, even without an SRS. Fancy that.

I first thought of porting it to the iPhone myself but as I'm not a Cocoa developer it would most probably take me too long and so I'm currently trying to find someone more experienced in this area who could convert it for me. Keep an eye on my Japanese Language and Culture Blog in order to try the iPhone version when released :)

Ok, now I'm sure that there a lot of people begging for this program. Now if anyone's being chased by Godzilla or those god awful zombies, and they need it to survive their predicament, of course they deserve it. Although I'm not in either situation, or in any extreme dire need (but there is a dire need). am learning Japanese at the highschool level, and my friends and I have started doing this annual competition that involves a lot of Katakana and Kanji (not exactly my friends' strong-point). I do plan on going to Japan, I actually want to teach Japanese when I'm older, but I'd like to get this program to help my friends now (I'll be living my teaching dream early for a short period). I just want you to know (even though I'm probably to late) I am still not being chased by godzilla, or rabid bunnies for the matter, but I feel that I definitely need this.
  • codePhantom · 6 months ago
I've been attempting to learn Japanese for a while now —though I only just started doing it seriously— and my recognition skills are horribly slow, especially katakana. I can remember all the characters but it just takes too much time to recall. Smart.fm's Brain Speed helped but seeing the answer right in front of me mean I could get it though I didn't actually “know”. I tried out NihongoUp and it seems to work much better to this purpose, even going as far as incorporate it into a really cool game-esque style. I think I should get a copy because it will really help in my self-study of Japanese and get it to the level I want it to be.

I am also a Apple fanboy, albeit without a Mac but as a more fortunate Apple fanboy, it is your duty to provide for you less fortunate brethren who didn't get SIX *hint *hint free copies.
    Noblesse Oblige.

I will be living in Japan starting July 25th and teaching at 2 junior high schools in Shikoku, Kagawa-ken, Muragame-shi. My initial contract is only for a year, but I imagine I will stay longer -- really depends on how well I am able to integrate with the existing staff (also, this is the JET program for all those who mentioned wanting to get to Japan; all you need is a college degree and the ability to speak the English language -- of course there are interviews etc. but those are the basic requirements). I am trying to get back what Japanese skills I have lost, and develop new ones that far exceed what I had already learned, and I think a nice study program like this would be a good way to reinforce reading and writing skills. And my kanji is somewhat, shall we say, ちょっと. Anyway, that is why I would like a copy of this program.

I don't know if there's a limit to the number of winners [Edit yep, only five can win, hope I still have a chance tho], but I've always been part of tofugu contests, and even though I never win, I'll still feel compelled to participate heh.

Next week, I'm graduating from high school (yipee!, finally) and I'll be starting my first year at university on east Asian studies and also it'll be my first year learning Japanese (at university as well)

This is a big step for me since I've been looking forward to this for as long as I can remember...I mean, I don't know how I started loving Japanese media and blogs like Tofugu, but I know for sure that I won't be giving it up that easily. I will be using a lot of the tools you've discussed on your site (which have helped me more than any online tutor I've ever had) and hopefully make my way into the Japanese language, the proper way, once and for all!

Well, there it is. It's not as witty or needy as those who have already won, but I hope that the fact that I'm gonna be studying the language at university helps me get this sexy prize lol.

Either way, I'll still be reading Tofugu, and I'll still participate in every contest until koichi morphs into Godzilla one day and is unable to use his fingers to type on his mac...

On May 5, (yes celebrated Boy's Day and Cinco de Mayo all in one day) I just got married to a beautiful Japanese national. We had set different goals of what we want in life. One of those is I have to learn Japanese. So I get her objective target to master Japanese in 5 years. I had purchased many Genki 1 textbook, manga, and a bunch of helpful apps for my iphone. It has been 3 months and I can read Hiragana and Katakana. I also have memorized at least 40 Kanji. My only problem is the vocabulary part of my self-study. This week I will focus on learning 20 -30 Japanese words a week. Once I can attain a command of what I want to say and response to questions, then I will have the biggest smile. This will be a lifelong commitment that will never get off its track, a commitment of making new Japanese friends. And to look back and say, "wow! I can understand and communicate in Japanese.!" Aloha from Hawaii...
